Arcadis and York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust celebrate completion of £47 million Urgent and Emergency Care Centre at Scarborough Hospital

Arcadis, the leading global company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets and York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has celebrated the completion and opening of a £47 million Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC) at Scarborough Hospital.

Arcadis was appointed as the lead architect and interior designer by the Trust, as part of the wider IHP team, to design the new facility. Set over two storeys, urgent and emergency care is delivered on the ground floor, encompassing assessment and treatment cubicles, resus bays, an observation and final assessment suite, and a dedicated diagnostic zone providing X-ray, CT scans and ultrasound. The first floor houses a new 26-bed critical and enhanced care unit.

From the outset, Arcadis worked closely with the Trust to realise its vision of delivering an acute medical model that brings together emergency, same-day emergency, and acute medical services under one roof - alongside vital diagnostics such as CT scanning. This marks a shift from an 'admit to assess' model to an 'assess to admit' approach to clinical care.

The scheme has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

The new UECC will also help address the increasing demand on the Emergency Department. Arcadis designed a healthcare facility that streamlines patient pathways to alleviate the pressure at the front door of the hospital and create a patient-focused environment with access to the highest standards of care. The new facility forms a key element of the Trust’s long-term strategic plan and will significantly improve the patient experience.

Arcadis’ work on the new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre at Scarborough Hospital further builds on its track record of delivering best-in-class healthcare facilities across the UK including The Dyson Cancer Centre in Bath for The Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust.

Neil Donelon, Architectural Technician - Studio Associate at Arcadis, said, “This state-of-the-art facility is a testament to our commitment to delivering best-in-class healthcare solutions. By integrating services and streamlining patient pathways, we are not only addressing the increasing demand on the Emergency Department but also significantly improving the patient experience. This project is a key element of the Trust’s long-term strategic plan, and we are proud to have played a pivotal role in its success.”

Dr Ed Smith, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Deputy Medical Director, added: “This is the single most significant step change in patient and staff experience for the delivery of urgent and emergency care in Scarborough and the surrounding areas in our working lifetimes, and its importance cannot be overstated.

“This new centre will completely transform how we manage patients. Clinicians will be able to make quicker decisions, reduce waiting times, and keep people out of hospital when it’s safe to do so - while ensuring those who do need admission are cared for promptly and efficiently.”
