Arcadis to support ProRail in transformation of Amsterdam Central Station with advisory, design, and supervision role

  • Chosen for its expertise in managing complex infrastructure projects within active urban environments, Arcadis will help transform Amsterdam Central Station into a high-capacity transport hub, preserving the station’s historic significance

May 20, 2025 – Arcadis, a global leader in intelligence-driven sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions, has been appointed by ProRail to provide project supervision and back-office support for the extensive renovation of Amsterdam Central Station. The six-year project transformation has a potential fee value of €21 million with options for two one-year extensions. In addition to this new role, Arcadis has been executing work on Amsterdam Central Station for ProRail, one of its strategic partners through its key client program, through several framework agreements for over 10 years.

The transformation will update the historic station to accommodate growing passenger volumes and multimodal transportation, all while the station remains fully operational. The project includes widening and extending the platforms, constructing a new underground bicycle parking facility beneath the tracks, expanding the eastern passenger tunnel, building a grade-separated junction near the Dijksgracht, and replacing five railway bridges over the eastern access. The station’s historic architectural features will be carefully restored to preserve its cultural and monumental significance.

Arcadis will play a pivotal role in coordinating between subcontractors and stakeholders to maintain safety, consistency, and operational continuity through the complex renovation process.

Alan Brookes, CEO at Arcadis, said, “Our ongoing collaboration with ProRail is built on trust, shared ambition, and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in creating modern transport hubs. With our proven management and advisory expertise working on similar projects, such as the Zuidasdok program in Amsterdam and Rotterdam Central Station in Rotterdam, we’re proud to support the transformation of Amsterdam Central Station into a future-ready, sustainable mobility hub that meets the growing needs of the city and country.
