Arcadis selected for roll-out of Rail Traffic Management System

Arcadis, a global leader in sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions, has announced that it has been selected by infrastructure manager ProRail to support making the future of rail travel in Zeeland, Netherlands, safer and more efficient by renewing the train protection system.

The project focuses on the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), which enhances both safety and efficiency on the rail network.

The contract, valued at approximately €12 million, will see Arcadis take the lead in designing, testing and supervising the works for the line between Roosendaal and Vlissingen.

The Zeeland Line has been chosen as the pilot route for the rollout of ERTMS and will be used to test and validate various design, construction, and operational processes, before applying them across the Netherlands.

Work will begin immediately and includes design, supervision of construction, testing activities and the final commissioning. The first phase focuses on the Lewedorp–Vlissingen section, followed by Roosendaal–Lewedorp.

Thanks in part to Arcadis’ in‑house developed design platform Dyndash, Arcadis is ahead in the areas of digitalization, automation and certification. This approach contributes to creating a comprehensive data foundation for the rail network and enables a faster and more controlled project delivery.

Heather Polinsky, Global President for Resilience and Mobility, Arcadis, said:This project is about more than technology. It is about creating a safe, sustainable and reliable railway that is ready for the future. We are proud to help make this ambition a reality together with ProRail and other partners.

In November 2025 the European Commission launched a comprehensive plan to accelerate the development of high-speed rail across the European Union, offering passengers significantly reduced travel times. This includes the ERTMS Deployment plan which aims to ensure enhanced interoperability through a harmonised rollout of the system.
